Nino Trindade
Biography
Nino Trindade was born in 1982 in Maputo, Mozambique. As a child, he began creating white sand drawings with the guidance of local artists near the school he attended. Later he moved in with his uncle, a sculptor, where he took up sculpting as a regular activity, honing his skills. In 1998, he ventured into wood carving. He participated in craft fairs where he showcased and sold his creations.
He pursued his undergraduate studies in Visual Arts at the Higher Institute of Arts and Culture (ISARC) in Maputo from 2002 to 2016. He is currently pursuing a Master degree in Multimedia Design (2023-2025) at the Faculty of Engineering, Pedagogical University of Mozambique. From 1999 to 2013 he participated in 19 group exhibitions of both sculptures and paintings in Mozambique and 2 group exhibitions in Europe (Finland in 2011 and Spain in 2013). More recently, from 2006 to 2023, he did in total 11 solo exhibitions of both sculptures and paintings in Mozambique and Portugal. In Maputo, he has exhibited in well-known places like HCB, Incaju, the Agrarian Institute, BCI, and the Prime Minister’s office.
Trindade was awarded for his wood sculpting technique in the TDM Biennial in Maputo, Mozambique, in 2011, and since then he has been noticed by curators and art critics who have interviewed him and written about his practice. His works are being held in private collections in countries such as France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Southern Africa, America, the Netherlands, Cameroon, as well as in his own country.
Artwork Description
The subject matters of Trindade's sculptures are drawn from the daily lives of Mozambican people. He uses entirely natural woods for his sculpting. His sculptural creations not only show a respect and love to nature, but also a respect and love to people and their lives.
Meanwhile, Trindade's paintings are more abstract, drawing not only from perceived moments of people's daily lives, but also combined with his own imagination.
